19TH ANNUAL SAN DIEGO WOODEN BOAT FESTIVAL SCHEDUELED FOR FATHERS DAY, JUNE 20-21, 2009

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The 19th annual San Diego Wooden Boat Festival, featuring more than 70 classic crafts, seminars on traditional maritime skills and activities for kids, will be held June 20-21 at the Koehler Kraft boatyard on Shelter Island.

The San Diego Wooden Boat festival is the premier annual event for Southern California traditional boat enthusiasts and provides a rare opportunity for the general public to view these crafts up close.  From small rowing, sailing, and power boats to regal schooners and rugged workboats, all are open to the public.

Hands-on activities for kids and adults this year include steamboat rides, knot tying lessons and maritime mural painting.

This year’s Wooden Boat Festival attractions and seminars will include:

  • Visit some of San Diego Bay’s classic beauties: several large classic vessels will be in attendance and available for viewing, both above and below decks. Owners will be on hand to give the history of the boats. Large craft at the festival this year include Dauntless, a 72-foot traditional schooner, and Ocean Queen V, a 55-foot racing yawl built in 1951 that was an original participant of the “San Francisco Big Boat Series” and won the series in 1957.
  • Steamboat rides: authentic steam-driven boats will be giving public tours of the yacht basin.
  • Custom-made small boats: handcrafted kayaks, canoes, dories and other small craft will be on display and their owners will be on-hand to discuss what it takes to build a small wooden boat.
  • Other seminars: will cover practical aspects of traditional boatwork, including instruction on the use of traditional tools, how to achieve professional quality paint and varnish finish work, hybrid boat restoration techniques and sail repair.
  • Ropework and knot tying for kids: every good sailor needs to know how to tie a bowline. Kids will learn the basic knots as well as the more challenging “monkey’s fist.”

Daytime activities at the 19th Annual San Diego Wooden Boat Festival run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.  All proceeds go to benefit Challenged America. Urban Miyares, co-founder of the charitable, San Diego-based, Challenged America, a recreational rehabilitation, adaptive-sailing program which was launched by disabled veterans in 1978, is available for interviews prior to and during the event.

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks and snacks will be available at the festival for an additional charge. Evening activities on Saturday include a barbecue and screenings of classic sailing movies.
