San Diego Coastkeeper Announces Its First Quarter 2011
Educational, Volunteer Events

Countless opportunities for San Diego County residents to participate

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—San Diego Coastkeeper, the area’s largest professional environmental organization working to protect inland and coastal waters, announces upcoming events for 2011. The coming months include the 4th annual Walk the Watershed on Feb. 5, beach cleanups, Water Quality Monitoring events and a Signs of the Tide public forum concerning the “Great Trash Migration.”

“Our events are aimed at residents across the county who like to learn about their local environmental issues and how they can positively make an impact,” said Coastkeeper Interim Executive Director Gabriel Solmer. “It is never too late to participate and learn about water quality issues that affect San Diego.”

In partnership with Ocean Discovery Institute, San Diego Coastkeeper is hosting the 4th annual Walk the Watershed restoration and education event in City Heights’ Swan Canyon on February 5. The event aims to educate and engage the community with hands-on projects that will restore and protect the Pueblo Watershed. The free event beings at 10 a.m. at Hamilton Elementary School and concludes at 1 p.m. with a celebration for participants.
San Diego Coastkeeper, along with Surfrider San Diego Chapter, hosts numerous beach cleanups throughout San Diego County. Residents of all ages are encouraged to participate in cleaning the local beaches.

Beach cleanup schedule is as follows:
January 22- Ocean Beach Pier
February 12- South Carlsbad- Ponto Jetty
February 19- Encinitas- Moonlight Beach
February 26- Pacific Beach- Tourmaline
March 12- Oceanside Pier
March 26- Coronado City Beach
April 9- Sunset Cliffs
April 23- Creek to Bay Cleanup

The organization’s Water Quality Monitoring Program, which is an essential component in establishing water quality trends in the county’s creeks and rivers, takes place every month.

Water Quality Monitoring Program schedule is as follows:
January 15: New volunteer training at 8:30 a.m. Field session begins at 11 a.m.
February 12: No training. Field session begins at 9 a.m.
March 19: New volunteer training at 8:30 a.m. Field session begins at 11 a.m.
April 16: No training. Field session begins at 9 a.m.

Coastkeeper’s quarterly Signs of the Tidepublic forum regarding the “Great Trash Migration” on March 9will feature expert speakers highlighting the history of trash regulation, where inland trash comes from, how it gets to the ocean and things residents can do to help.
