San Diego Coastkeeper Celebrates Earth Day with
'Smart on Water' Trivia Challenge

Environmental organization also hosts other volunteer events in first quarter 2011

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—This Earth Day, San Diego Coastkeeper will merge leisure with education by hosting Smart on Water Earth Day Challenge on April 20 from 6-9 p.m. The event at El Take It Easy includes a water trivia contest and a raffle boasting many prizes including a mouth-watering pound of locally raised, sustainable bacon. The evening will conclude with the crowning of San Diego’s first “Water Whiz.”

Members can attend the fundraiser for $5 and non-members can join for $15, which comes with a one-year membership to Coastkeeper and a complementary "I Bottle My
Own" reusable water bottle. El Take It Easy is located at 3926 30th Street and will donate 15% of restaurant proceeds to protecting water.

“Earth Day provides a spotlight for earth-friendly practices and we wanted to use this opportunity to provide education in a fun, social environment,” said Coastkeeper’s Interim Executive Director Gabriel Solmer. “This event is rooted in emphasizing sustainability and is part of Coastkeeper’s ongoing efforts to protect our marine life and waters while keeping San Diegans aware and engaged.”

In addition to the Smart on Water event, San Diego Coastkeeper provides San Diego residents with a variety of opportunities to act as partners in preservation, including Water Quality Monitoring and beach cleanups.

Water Quality Monitoring, an essential component in establishing water quality trends in the county’s creeks and rivers, will occur on:

April 16: No training. Field session begins at 9 a.m.
May 21: Volunteer training at 8:30 a.m. Field session at 11 a.m.
June 11: No training. Field Session begins at 9 a.m.

Twice-monthly Beach Cleanups, hosted alongside Surfrider San Diego Chapter, are as follows:

April 9: Sunset Cliffs
April 30: Creek to Bay Cleanup
May 14: Oceanside Harbor
May 21: Encinitas- Moonlight Beach
May 28: Mission Bay-Fiesta Island
June 11: Oceanside Harbor
June 25: Pacific Beach- Crystal Pier
