Cook + Schmid Developed Article Published in Etihad Airways’ In-Flight Magazine

Etihad In Flight

Etihad Airways has partnered with IBM to transform the company into the world’s first “cognitive” airline. In doing so, Etihad Airways needed a strategic communications program to inform Etihad leadership and staff, its technology and innovation group, partners, stakeholders and the public of its new capabilities and programs. Cook + Schmid crafted a communications plan including positioning and messaging for each audience. The plan also identified various communications channels. To make audiences aware of the company’s evolution, Cook + Schmid staff developed email templates, newsletter articles and other digital and print collateral, including an article published in Etihad Airways’ in-flight magazine.

Cook + Schmid Awarded Gold Hermes Creative Award
for National Campaign to Engage with Millennials

SAN DIEGO, CA – Cook + Schmid announced today that the firm is the recipient of the national 2017 Gold Hermes Creative Award from the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) for work conducted as part of a campaign designed to engage with millennials to take action for birds and bird conservation.

Cook + Schmid earned the award for one of a series of posters that celebrate the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty. The posters and other materials reflect a strategy to make the milestone more relevant to younger generations. The Migratory Bird Treaty is an accord between the U.S. and Canada designed to protect birds and habitats critical to their survival.

Working with its client, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Cook + Schmid developed a complete brand and supporting materials, including a logo for the centennial campaign and online and print collateral. The project utilized original artwork that reflected a “graffiti bird” style to evoke urban youthfulness while highlighting the natural beauty of the birds themselves.

In addition to the posters, Cook + Schmid developed a social media strategy, social media content, and collateral materials. Cook + Schmid also created a series of infographics and other assets that were widely shared online.

The strategy for the Migratory Bird Treaty Centennial was based on research into attitudes, levels of awareness, values, and other psychographic information pertaining to the target audiences. In particular, the campaign was designed extend the campaign beyond bird watchers and environmentalists, while still resonating with those groups.

Cook + Schmid Awarded Silver Bernays Award of Excellence – Public Affairs

Firm recognized for its public engagement and community outreach in support of the Port of San Diego’s Master Plan Update

SAN DIEGO, CA – Cook + Schmid, a full-service public relations, public affairs, advertising and marketing firm, received a Silver Bernays Award for Public Affairs at the 2016 Edward L. Bernays Awards. The event was hosted by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The agency earned the Mark of Excellence, along with HKS Urban Design Studio and the Port of San Diego, for the outstanding public participation program that led to the development of the Vision and Guiding Principles for the Port of San Diego’s Master Plan Update. The Vision and Guiding principles will guide the Port of San Diego’s New Master Plan Update, a comprehensive plan that will guide the future of San Diego Bay.

As a consultant to the Port of San Diego, Cook + Schmid created a public engagement plan that engaged a broad audience including stakeholders, elected officials across the region, the mayors and planners of the Port’s five member cities (San Diego, National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado), as well as the general public to gather the input necessary to develop a collaborative, holistic vision for the Port tidelands.

Outreach included a boat tour of San Diego Bay, which provided stakeholders with an opportunity for stakeholders to interact directly with design consultants. A series of facilitated workshops, conducted in both English and Spanish, captured input from community stakeholders, which provided another layer of information to inform the program. Surveys were also made available as a way to provide input, with more than 2,000 people completing the online survey. The public workshops were attended by many individuals who had never participated in discussions with the Port of San Diego.

Cook + Schmid also designed and launched a project website and implemented social media for communicating engagement opportunities and directly gather public input.

“It was an honor to help create a new Master Plan that will take a holistic, thoughtful and balanced approach to creating a vibrant, sustainable bay for future generations,” said Jon Schmid, president & CEO of Cook + Schmid. “The Vision and Guiding Principles are an important first step in the process.”

San Diego Architectural Foundation Accepted a Record Number of Nominations for 2016 Orchids & Onions

Press Release Header-page-001(new)

August 16, 2016

SAN DIEGO, CA – The San Diego Architectural Foundation (SDAF) today announced a record number of nominations for its 40th celebration of Orchids & Onions awards, which recognizes the best and the worst of architecture, planning and urban design in the San Diego region.

“Hitting 161 quality nominations for Orchids & Onions is a huge accomplishment and reflects the interest in the built environment as well as the growth in San Diego,” said Perriann Hodges, San Diego Architectural Foundation board director, 2016 Orchids & Onions program co-chair, and designer with Studio E Architects. “Our goal this year was to take Orchids & Onions back to the people and to generate a dialogue with the public about what makes for great neighborhoods. I think these numbers indicate we have been successful in engaging with San Diego’s residents on this important topic.”

The 161 entries submitted by the July 31st deadline this year represents a whopping 96 percent increase over the 82 nominations submitted in 2015.

For the 2016 program, SDAF for the first time contracted with an external public relations and marketing agency, Cook + Schmid, to design and implement a strategic communications program to promote the competition.

Annually, a committee of SDAF volunteers plans and implements the Orchids & Onions awards program. This year, with special focus on bringing the program “back to the people,” the committee has conducted a range of tactics in local communities to spread the word about the opportunity to nominate potential Orchids & Onions.

The 2016 Orchids & Onions Awards Ceremony will be held on October 13th at Horton Plaza Park and Spreckels Theatre starting at 5 p.m. Early bird ticket sales begin on August 21st and can be purchased at orchidsandonions.org.

About Orchids & Onions
Orchids & Onions is a fundraising program of the San Diego Architectural Foundation; an independent 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to education and the promotion of outstanding architecture, planning and urban design throughout the San Diego region. The objective of Orchids & Onions is to raise awareness, and encourage practical discourse about our environment, thereby effecting positive change and more thoughtful design. Orchids & Onions affords all San Diegans an opportunity to nominate what they believe deserves praise or critique, comment on all nominations, and even present an award by voting for the People’s Choice Orchid & Onion as part of the program.
