was awarded four Gold Awards by the Health Care Communicators of San Diego (HCCSD) at the organization’s annual Finest Awards ceremony on April 18, 2013. The awards recognize outstanding heath care and health-related communications and public relations campaigns.
Cook + Schmid won the awards for its “Fight the Bite” public education and awareness campaign to help prevent West Nile Virus. Conducted on behalf of the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health, the program focused on getting residents to prevent mosquito breeding areas, protect themselves from mosquito bites and to report virus indicators to the County.
HCCSD awarded Cook + Schmid Gold Awards in the categories of Overall PR Campaigns, Health and Wellness Campaigns, Community Relations, and Multicultural Marketing. The “Fight the Bite” program received a perfect score for overall PR campaigns.
The 2012 survey showed that the San Diego public relations campaign achieved: 97 percent awareness of the virus among residents; 93 percent awareness among Hispanic audiences; and more than 73 percent of residents willing to report mosquito problems to the County for treatment.
