Who doesn’t love the holidays? The overindulgence of food, decadent desserts and festive decorations are enough to put a smile on your face and a rumble in your belly. And here at Cook + Schmid, we are especially excited about the lights… the San Diego Bay Parade of Lights, that is!
This December 9 and 16, the Parade of Lights continues its annual tradition with its 41st procession of boats on San Diego Bay. This year’s festivities have added meaning as it marks the presenting sponsor’s 50th anniversary celebration. In fact, the Port of San Diego will also end its year-long anniversary celebration with the 2013 parade.
Every year, more than 100,000 San Diegans kick off their holiday season with the Parade of Lights. It is not only a celebration of the holiday season, but also a tribute to the boating community. More than 80 boats are lavishly decorated according to a new theme each year. This year’s theme? “USS Santa” – inspired by our city’s very own USS Midway, whose vessel carrier number corresponds to the year of the parade – 41.
Over the years, the growing attendance rates have caused residents to seek various vantage points around the city, including privately owned businesses, restaurants, hotels and other venues along the bayfront.
And the best part of it all? The Parade of Lights is in fact a contest! All decorated boats are judged on originality and the creative use of decorations depicting the year’s theme.
