Wednesday, February 13, 2008
The law firm Bell, Boyd & Lloyd LLP is opening an office in San Diego, the firm announced Wednesday.
Launching with 13 attorneys and technical specialists, the office will serve as the center for the firm’s life sciences group. It will offer corporate, patent procurement and patent portfolio management services to bio-pharma and other venture-funded and emerging companies.
Bell Boyd’s offices will be located at the Gateway at Torrey Hills.
“We are extremely pleased to open an office in San Diego and to welcome this prominent team of professionals to our firm,” said Bell Boyd’s managing partner, Nancy Bertoglio. “Our lawyers already counsel dozens of venture-funded and emerging companies nationwide, and our presence in San Diego will enable us to better serve this growing market. We expect to make a significant impact on the West Coast market from day one.”
Prominent biotechnology patent attorney Stephanie L. Seidman, who joins Bell Boyd from Fish & Richardson P.C., and corporate attorney David A. Fisher, who formerly managed San Diego’s Fisher Thurber LLP, will lead Bell Boyd’s new office.
“I have been impressed by Bell Boyd’s depth of scientific expertise, their experience with emerging companies and their commitment to the San Diego biotechnology community,” Seidman said. “The firm’s extensive range of services will provide an expanded base of resources for my clients, yet allow me to provide a high level of personalized service. This is exactly what my clients need.”
Also joining the firm are associates Frank J. Miskiel from Fish & Richardson; and Cheryl A. Allaire, Gregory F. Brucia and Alidad Vakili from Fisher Thurber.
Joining with Seidman are seven technology specialists who have Ph.D.s in fields ranging from molecular biology to immunology, organic chemistry and biochemistry.
The San Diego office will draw upon the resources of the firm’s nationally known patent, trademark and copyright attorneys and a corporate group that has handled hundreds of M&A, securities, finance, private equity and venture capital transactions.
Seidman has earned an international reputation for helping early stage, emerging and developing biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies secure patents for their technology.
A scientist with advanced degrees, including a Ph.D. in molecular biology and biochemistry and M.S. and B.S. degrees in chemistry and physics, she will address the 2008 BIO International Convention to be held in June in San Diego.
Fisher has served as a trusted advisor and outside general counsel to established public and private companies, venture capitalists and entrepreneurs throughout the U.S.
“We are honored to join Bell Boyd and to be at the forefront of the firm’s expansion into the West,” he said. “Their proven track record in corporate, securities, mergers and acquisitions work offers a tremendous depth of experience and resources to our clients.”
