New Edge in Public relations

COOK & SCHMID PUBLIC AFFAIRS CAMPAIGN WINS FOUR INDUSTRY AWARDS

NEW YORK (June 10, 2008)A Cook & Schmid public affairs campaign developed for the Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST) in San Bernardino County has garnered four national industry awards for its creativity and effectiveness.  The Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) honored the MAST wildfire awareness campaign with a Silver Anvil Award of Excellence, which recognizes strategic public relations planning and implementation, during the 2008 Silver Anvil Awards Evening held June 5 in New York City.

“The finalists in this year's Silver Anvil Awards represent some of the most strategic, creative and finest public relations campaigns in our industry,” said Joice Truban Curry, 2008 PRSA Silver Anvil Committee national chair and president/CEO of San Diego-based c3 Communications, Inc. “The Silver Anvils are the Oscars of the public relations profession and these finalists exemplify the best practices in the country.”

In addition, PRSA awarded Cook & Schmid a Bronze Anvil, which acknowledges superior performance in the design and execution of an individual tactic within a broader public relations program, for a 2008 calendar.  The calendar communicates a different fire safety message each month and features the distinctive brand that Cook & Schmid created for the MAST program. The brand evokes WPA art from the 1930s and 1940s and the graphics of the golden age of the travel poster. The MAST brand appeals to mountain residents’ sense of pride in the region’s history and encourages shared responsibility for protecting the community from the risk of a devastating wildfire.

Earlier this month, the Hermes Creative Awards, administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, named Cook & Schmid Honorable Mention recipients for the 2008 calendar.

The group also bestowed its highest honor, the prestigious Platinum Award, for a poster Cook & Schmid designed for the MAST campaign.

“The brand we developed and the supporting tools for the campaign, like the poster, have become a recognizable symbol for creating defensible space and have changed behavior to increase fire safety in the San Bernardino County Mountains.  We believe this work has contributed directly to saving lives and reducing the number of homes and other structures destroyed by wild fires,” said Jon Schmid, Cook & Schmid partner and supervisor on the MAST account.
