Background
This year marks the 60th consecutive year that Las Posadas has occurred in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Las Posadas is a reenactment of the centuries-old Mexican tradition of Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem. The tradition, which originates in Spain, symbolizes the trials that Mary and Joseph suffered when trying to find a place to stay where Jesus could be born. Las Posadas begins December 16 and ends December 25. Traditionally, different families in a community will each volunteer a night between these dates to act as innkeepers and have the Posada held at their home. Each stop typically includes a nativity scene, prayers, carols and other festivities. In Old Town, Las Posadas is acted out in a one-night event through the historic park and includes nine different stops throughout the plaza.
