Sportaneous Launches Sports-Based iPhone App & Website
New mobile application and website lets users easily organize or join local pick-up games
SAN DIEGO—Sportaneous Inc., a company dedicated to helping exercise enthusiasts find and participate in team sporting activities, has developed an iPhone application and website that use GPS technology to facilitate spontaneous group sports games and will launch the free product exclusively to the San Diego region on Jan. 19.
Sportaneous uses location-based technology to match a user with team sports games that fit his or her unique schedule, location and skill level. The service lets users create or join spontaneous sports games and provides incentives for usage, including titles such as ‘King of the Court’, and inclusion in a monthly “Sportaneous Hall of Fame,” and rewards (e.g. athletic apparel).
A joint effort of three San Diego natives, Sportaneous provides users with a convenient way to stay physically active, and creates a network of players who prefer to participate in team sports rather than exercise alone. Sportaneous also serves as an alternative to costly gym memberships and as a complement to recreational sports leagues.
“Staying physically active is increasingly difficult these days, but it is critical to staying healthy and preventing diseases that are present in epidemic proportions in America,” said Sportaneous Co-Founder and President Aaron Royston. “From young professionals to working parents with inconsistent schedules, Sportaneous makes it easy for anyone to find the right game, at the right time with the right people. Sportaneous gets the ball rolling on physical health.”
The mobile application will be available for download on the iPhone and accessible to other devices using mobile web. Plans to port the application to Blackberry and Android users are being considered.
“The idea is to organize and expand upon the pick-up cultures that exist in sports such as basketball, soccer and beach volleyball. Our research shows that 75 percent of people would prefer to play team sports to working out alone,” said NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton, a member of Sportaneous’ board of advisors.
