On Friday, San Diegans Anai Novoa and Ulisses Barraza are just two of thousands taking final exams at UC Santa Barbara and UCLA, respectively. However, on Monday they’re slated to be in the White House as guests of President Obama.
The students, both from the diverse and economically challenged community of City Heights, are part of a team representing Ocean Discovery Institute. It’s one of eight recipients chosen for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering for 2010. The award comes with a $25,000 National Science Foundation grant.
For 12 years, the nonprofit Ocean Discovery Institute has mentored young people from urban and diverse backgrounds, grooming them to be tomorrow’s scientific leaders.
It’s compiling quite a track record. Last month, its students were in Seattle to claim a $10,000 award from the World Wildlife Fund for designing fish nets that cut down on the number of sea turtle deaths.
